Tea at CMN – Alexandre O’Neill

We began the second quarter with a ‘Conversation on Alexander O’Neill’, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. A text written and read by Solange focussing on her life, work and personality.

A poet of surrealism, amusing, fantastical, incomprehensible and who knew how to laugh, above all at himself. Founder of the Lisbon Surrealist Group with Mário Cesariny, António Pedro and José-Augusto França, he worked as an advertising technician.

Some poems were read by members, especially Clara (“Friend”, “Portugal”, “Lizards in the Sun”, “Let’s Follow the Hake” and “Caixadòclos”), while at the same time a slideshow was shown with photographs of her life, manuscripts of poems and manuscripts with dedications from other writers and friends.

We also heard the poems “Seagull”, “Bossa Nova Ant” and “There are Words that Kiss Us, sung respectively by Carlos do Carmo, Amália Rodrigues and Marisa.

This was followed, as usual, by a tea party and lively socialising among the members present.
