On 20 November, the Club organised a guided tour of the Almada Negreiros panels, eight at the Alcântara Maritime Station and six at the Rocha de Conde de Óbidos Maritime Station. The work was discreetly inaugurated on 19 June 1948 and constitutes the largest collection of Portuguese mural paintings of the 20th century.

The three panels below refer to the theme of Nau Catrineta, which has a lot to tell…

On the other side, still at Alcântara Station:

It was a very interesting visit, during which the guide explained the meaning of the murals to us. Almada challenged the regime on which he depended, daring to depict the realistic experience of a poor, working-class Portugal, the often permanent departure of Portuguese people abroad, and the social and cultural links with the then colonies – the pulse of a real country.

The restoration of the 14 murals in the stations was recently completed, thanks to funding secured by the World Monuments Fund.
