On February 22, the Club went on a very interesting guided tour of the Sant’Ana Sanatorium in Parede (Cascais).
The former Sant’Ana Sanatorium stands out for its long façade, parallel to Avenida Marginal, which reveals the eclectic taste of early 20th century Portuguese architecture, combined with a deep functional capacity, well expressed in the articulation of spaces, services and equipment. The initiative and funding for its construction came from Amélia and Frederico Biester, later succeeded by Claudina Chamiço, who later bequeathed it to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. Doctors Sousa Martins and José de Almeida were the first clinical managers of the project, coordinated by architect Rosendo Carvalheira. Started in 1901, the first wing was inaugurated three years later, although it was only fully completed in 1912.
